Hunting for history: Mk1 Capri racer

One of the coolest parts of publishing The Garage is e-meeting car fans from around the world in their quest for information. Kiwi Tony Vujnovich has just bought this Mk1 Ford Capri from Californian John McDermott with the intention of vintage racing it in New Zealand. John raced the car with NASA at Sears Point in the Nineties.

Prior to that, the car was apparently raced and used for driving schools since the Seventies. That is a rather vague history and Tony would obviously like to fill in the blanks.

We have a healthy crowd of West Coast racers who read The Garage, not to mention NASA members across the States so bring it on folks! Who knows the history of the #158 Capri? Photos from the car’s early days would be a huge asset for Tony also.

Editor’s note: I’ll add in comments about the car as they come in.

Jerry Kunzman, founder of N.A.S.A.
I recognize the car and remember John McDermot. Our records indicate that
he did some high performance driving with NASA, but never raced. However,
that was a long time ago, and it’s possible the records are incorrect. If
someone can show some race results with him listed, then I wouldn’t dispute
it.

It does show that he entered a race with NASA, but “DNS” which means Did Not
Start.

Robert Hayes, west coast racer
its from the Seattle area- It wasn’t racing much in the early 90′s when I was there but it was always for sale or rent for the season. It was just a cheap race car – sure didn’t look like that.
